マイ・モーニング・ジャケットのエンジニアが語るIEM
（My Morning Jacket: Rocking with IEM）

モニター・エンジニアのブレント・リンドにとって、マイ・モーニング・ジャケットと仕事をするのは夢でした。「彼らに会う前からファンだった。もう３年も一緒に仕事をしている。」

彼は言います。

「実は俺が働いていたモンスターズ・オブ・フォークというツアーでリード・ヴォーカルのジム・ジェイムスに会ったんだ。とても馬が合ってね、ジャケットで働かないかと誘ってくれたんだ。場所もタイミングもばっちりだった。」

リンドはいくつものエリアで彼の専門知識と経験を生かしてバンドをサポートしてきましたが、その一つにイヤモニがあります。「５人のうちジム・ジェイムスを除く４人はイヤモニを使っていた。ジムは頑固だった。」リンドは言います。

「あるとき、ロスのヴィリッジ・レコーダーでフル装備のスタジオ・ライブをやったんだ。小さな部屋で、過激なほど音が大きかった。その後でジムが俺のところにやってきて、『イヤモニ使うよ』って言ったんだ。」

その時点では、バンドは典型的な硬いアクリル製のイヤモニを使っていました。

「ジムはすぐに適応してくれたからよかった。でも彼は大声でシャウトするときにひどく(イヤモニが)ずれてしまい、大事な瞬間が台無しになると言っていた。」とリンドは語ります。

「センサフォニクスと以前仕事をした事があったから、どう解決すべきかすぐに分かったよ。だから彼のために3MAXを注文したんだ。」

（イヤモニが）“ずれる”という事はベースの音が大きく損失されることです。センサフォニクスの柔らかいシリコン製のイヤモニは外耳道にぴったりと装着され、“ずれる”ということがありません。「そしてとても着け心地がいいんだ。そのこともすごく大事だね。」とリンドは言います。

「ジムはあまりに気に入ったので、そのとき他のメンバーが使っていた（他社の）イヤモニから替えて自分と同じものを使うように促したんだ。みんなそれが大きな（音楽的な）ステップアップだったと感じていたと思うよ。」

商品自体もさることながら、ブレント・リンドは会社としてのセンサフォニクスにも感銘を受けています。

「会社の気質、特にマイケル・サントゥッチがより大きな違いをもたらしているね。」

彼は言います。

「この市場にいる（イヤモニメーカーの）誰もが目新しいものばっかり追いかけている、そうだろ？今や２３ケものドライバーが入ったものもある！でも俺はそういう人たちが聴覚や責任感について真剣に考えているとは思えないんだ。サントゥッチ博士はそういうこと（安全性など）を商品に盛り込んでいる。彼は業界のリーダーだ。」

彼は続けます。「バンドのメンバーは全員大人だし、みんな長期的に継続できる活動を考えている。彼らは３０年後もこの仕事をやっていたいし、それは俺も同じだ。先月シカゴにいたとき、サントゥッチ博士と幾人かのスタッフが出てきて俺たちと話してくれた。3Dシステムのデモを体験させてくれて、dBチェックカーを見せてくれて、バンドと話してくれた。メンバー達はその後何日もそのことについて激賞して話していたよ。センサフォニクスは必要なものを全部持っている。爆音のロック・ショーをやるバンドが“やりたいことを可能にする”すべを。そしてそれを長い期間続けていくすべもね。」

マイ・モーニング・ジャケットは最近dBサウンド・レベルチェッカーを導入しました。「俺たちがどんなに大きな音を聞いていたのか知って驚いた。」リンドは言います。

「実際の音のレベルを気づかせてくれたし、どの程度なら安全かも分からせてくれた。次第に抑制をかけてくれるツールを手に入れた。他の会社がこのような商品を作っているという話は聞いたことがないな。センサフォニクスがまた一つ新しいものを提供してくれたね。」

もちろんエンジニアやミュージシャンにとって最終的に一番大切なのは音質です。「3MAXは素晴らしいよ。スタジオの音質みたいだ。」

リンドは言います。「センサフォニクスに移行して最も大きかった変化は低周波数の強力な一貫性だ。硬い型（プラスチック製）では、よりよく聴こえる（イヤモニターの）場所を探そうと常に入れ直し続けないとならない。それはミュージシャンにとってひどく邪魔なことだ。センサフォニクスのシリコンはすごく奥までぴったり入るから、一旦入れると入ったまま。そのことでバンドメンバーに統一したモニタリングを与えることができるんだ。」

マイ・モーニング・ジャケットで雇われる前に一通りの有名ブランドのイヤモニを使用してきたブレントは、モニターの質がバンドに与える影響の大きさを知っています。「それがオーダーメイドのイヤモニの特徴だ。」

彼は言います。「かなり大きな投資であり、実際に購入しない限り効果全部を経験する事はできない。（どのメーカーも）みんな自分たちのものが一番いいと言うから、より良い商品を見つけるのが難しい時がある。俺はほとんど全部を使ってきたけど、個人的な経験から言わせてもらうとセンサフォニクスのイヤモニは明確に違っていて明らかに良いよ。」

２０１２年のハードなツアーを終えて、マイ・モーニング・ジャケットはしばしの休憩を取ります。その後年末のホリデーシーズンにニューヨークとボストンでいくつかショーを行います。ブレント・リンドとマイ・モーニング・ジャケットの長年のFOHエンジニアのライアン・ピケットは、もうレコーディングも終わり２月に販売予定のリード・ヴォーカルのジム・ジェームスのソロアルバムのサポートもかねて、来年また一緒にツアーに戻ってきます。バンドは春に新しいアルバムをレコーディングする予定です。ブレント・リンドは待ちきれません。

「ジャケットのためにミキシングをすることに俺は信念を持っている。」かれは結びます。

「彼らの音楽はやりがいがあるし、レコーディングの度に成長している。彼らはまた今やっている事にすごく感謝しているし、ここにくるまでにがんばってきたことがこれからもやっていく唯一の道だと知っている。彼らは長く続けていきたいと切に思っていて、その一部になれる事は素晴らしいよ。」

Monitor engineer Brent Lind calls working with My Morning Jacket his dream gig. “I was a fan before I met them, and I’ve been with them three years now,” he says. “I actually met the lead singer, Jim James, on a tour I worked called Monsters of Folk. We hit it off pretty well, and he invited me to work for the Jacket. Right place, right time.”

One of the areas where Lind helped the band was his expertise and experience with in-ear monitoring. “Four of the five guys were wearing them, everyone but Jim James. He was a holdout,” says Lind. “Then we did a live studio performance at The Village Recorder in LA with our full rig. Small room, brutally loud. After that, Jim came to me and said ‘I’m ready to try the ears.’”

At that point, the band was using typical hard acrylic custom earphones. “James was an instant convert, which was great. But he commented that when he would really belt, his ears would lose their seal pretty badly, and that really took him out of the moment,” recounts Lind. “Having worked with Sensaphonics before, I knew exactly what the solution was, so we ordered him a 3MAX.”

Loss of seal causes a massive loss off bass response in IEMs. The soft silicone construction of Sensaphonics earpieces flexes along with the ear canal, so that critical seal is maintained. “And it’s much more comfortable, which is huge,” says Lind. “Jim James loved them so much, he basically forced the rest of the band – who were all happy with what they had – to get them. And once they had them, I think everybody had that same feeling of what a big step up it was. So Jim’s seal problems turned out to be an opportunity to take the guys to a new level, and it’s worked out great”

Lind emphasizes that sound quality is the first consideration, both for himself as engineer as well as the musicians. “The 3MAX sounds amazing. It’s studio quality sound,” he says. “Moving to Sensaphonics, the biggest change is getting a strong and consistent low frequency response. With hard molds, you find yourself constantly pushing them in, trying to find the sweet spot. That’s pretty distracting for a musician. Sensaphonics silicone really fits snug and deep, so once they’re in, they’re in. That lets me give the band a consistent monitor experience.”

Beyond the products, Brent Lind is also impressed with Sensaphonics as a company. “What makes an even bigger difference is the company’s ethos – in particular Michael Santucci,” he says. “Everyone else in this market is basically playing the razor marketing game, you know? Now with 23 drivers! But I don’t hear any of them talking seriously about hearing and responsibility. But Sensaphonics does. Dr. Santucci is an industry leader in that area, and brings that to his products.”

My Morning Jacket also recently acquired the dB Check in-ear sound level analyzer from Sensaphonics. “It’s been a revelation, to see just how loud we’ve been listening,” says Lind. “It’s made us aware of the actual levels we’re at, and how long it’s safe. So now we’ve got a tool so we can gradually rein it in. I don’t know of another company making a product anything like it.”

Having used most other major IEM brands, Brent Lind knows that the quality of monitors can make a huge difference to a band. “That’s the thing about custom molds,” he says. “It’s a fairly big investment, and you don’t really get the full experience until you make the purchase. Everyone tells you theirs is the best, so sometimes the better product is hard to find. I’ve worked with most of them now and I can say from personal experience that Sensaphonics in-ears are really different and clearly better.”

Lind concludes, “The guys in My Morning Jacket – we’re all adults, and we care about sustainability and the long term. They want to still be doing this in 30 years, and so do I. Sensaphonics gets what it’s all about – helping the band do what they do, which is play killer rock shows. And to be able to do that for a long time.”
