Kevin Glendinning checks his ears at the door!

Freelance monitor engineer Kevin Glendinning stopped by Sensaphonics HQ recently. At 30 years old, Kevin has already logged ten years on the road, with a roster of heavy hitters as clients. We had a brief chat:

Q: What brings you here today, Kevin?

Time for a before I hit the road. I like to get my ears checked once a year, both visibly and audibly. I’d like to be mixing for another 20 years at least, so it’s important to keep my hearing in good shape. I go to Michael (Santucci) because he’s the best audiologist in the music business, because I trust him and consider him a friend.

Q: Where do you go from here?

It’s a crazy schedule. I start with some one-offs – a charity event in Paris with Lenny Kravitz, followed by Justin Timberlake’s annual Shriners event in Las Vegas, where I’ll do monitors for several bands. After that, I’ll be working with Maroon 5 on a college tour.

Q: What’s your relationship with Sensaphonics?

I’m a big fan of the company. I use the 2X-S as my reference monitors. The sound is amazingly accurate, they are the most physically comfortable and they are durable. I’ve used everything out there – headphones, earphones, nearfields – and Sensaphonics hits it right on the mark.

It’s also one of those products that gets the fewest complaints from road guys. We can’t afford to trust equipment that isn’t reliable. The Sensaphonics stuff is so durable, it rarely breaks. I’ve had very few service calls ever, and any time I’ve needed anything on the road, it’s never a day early, never a day late – always on the mark. And that’s really important when you’re on the road. The support is always there.

Q: Why do you call the your reference monitor?

When I have an artist with a mix of different earphones, wedges, etc., across 14 different stage positions, I know that if I get a happening mix with my 2X-S, it’s going to sound good no matter what the artist is using. They’re that accurate. I use mine everywhere – when I’m mixing, at the gym, in airplanes, you name it. They haven’t failed me yet

. Q: How do you deal with volume issues on an artist level?

It varies; it’s relationship-dependent. I try to make them aware. When I hand them their bodypack, I tell them, this is the level I advise. But once I hand it off, it’s literally in their hands and they are free to dial it up. So my role is to advise – I can’t handcuff them. I’ve had a few conversations like that and if they shrug their shoulders and look the other way, well then so be it. So I see my role as making recommendations.

Q: Have you looked at the dB Check in-ear sound level analyzer?

I just checked it out and it looks like a great tool. To be able to show the artist their actual level and what it means for exposure times is amazing. One thing I learned from Michael is, just because your ears aren’ t ringing doesn’t mean you’re hearing is protected. The dB Check is a great idea and a real tribute to Sensaphonics’ innovation and creativity. That’s why I love you guys.
